The Sandy McNabb cross-country ski area is an under appreciated gem, largely due to the variable snow conditions there. Due to being on the front ranges, it gets subjected to warmer weather and chinook winds, which means the trails often need a bit more snow.

Sandy McNabb Campground is a reservation-only campground found in Sheep River Provincial Park, 21 km west of Turner Valley on Hwy. 546. There are over 100 well-treed sites suited to RVs and tents. Beginning from Sandy McNabb campground, this route crosses Sheep River and heads up the ridge to the right. The creek crossing is easy when frozen but may prove to be a challenge and an off-trail bushwhack if water levels are high. This route is not well defined and will involve a lot of route-finding.

Great trip. Deviated from linked trail. Hiked with icers on 5 cm fresh snow. Great views in sunshine en route and from hills. Started at Kananaskis boundary over high noons along to Sandy McNabb lower trail looped up north summit and round to north. Back and up hill lunch at top in warm sunshine with views.
